#antiSOCIALab: episode 3 - Author's Workshop on Novel Writing at Antisocial on 10 & 11 October 2015

Novel Writing Workshop is a shared initiative of Grapevine India Publishers and Social Offline as part of #antiSOCIALab. The two day introductory course is tailored for beginners who are in the process of writing their first book. The workshop will also be an opportunity for some writers to get their work published by Grapevine India.The first edition has a maximum capacity of thirty attendees.

The Instructor, Sachin Garg, is a bestselling author with more than half a million copies in print in India. He is also the founder of Grapevine India Publishers, the country’s premier indie publishing outfit, which has given us bestselling authors like Durjoy Datta, Nikita Singh, Anurag Batra, Dr Amit Kapoor, and more. An alumnus of Delhi College of Engineering and MDI, Gurgaon, he has also written for television and spoken at several Indian and international forums. He will be conducting all the sessions unless otherwise stated.

**Course Structure**
1st session – Introductions & getting started

We start off with conceptualizing a novel together, where the group provides the characters, the plot and the conflict for a story. Through this discussion we bring out the dynamics of novel writing. We also organize the attendees in six groups of five each.

2nd session – Aspects of writing
Through taking a popular reference book, we discuss the deeper nuances of novel writing, discussing how the author concerned handled the challenges of writing that book.

3rd session – Tropes & techniques – (guest speaker – a bestselling author)
With the help of videos, we discuss the five most popular tropes and techniques used by authors and writers to build the conflict of a story. We end the session with an overnight writing related activity to be done in respective groups.

4th session – Discussion of overnight activity
We start off with a discussion of the overnight activity. The instructor would have already gone through all six entries and we bring out the previous day’s learning in the submissions made. We will also organize a ‘Gallery Walk’ to make it more fruitful.

5th session – The publishing industry
The instructor will share his rich experience in how the publishing industry works in India and abroad, how the publishing process works and what exactly is a publisher looking for when he decides on going ahead with a book.

6th session – The importance of story in everything (guest speaker – Anurag Batra – chairman – Business World Magazine & exchange4media Group & author of ‘World’s Greatest Philosophers’)
Mr Batra will share his experience about how he has inculcated a story telling format in journalism and his life, apart from his books.

The instructor will round up the workshop, also sharing steps on ‘How To Get Published’ by Grapevine India.
